How do you decipher a key logger?

when you get the information, it tells you how many keystrokes have been made.How can you tell by the numbers what the message is saying?Are certain numbers valued as letters that you can read? what good is it if you can't figure out what is being said.i want to decode it but don't know how i dont understand this whole concept. laymans terms only....OK?

  1. key loggers copy whatever is typed... so if all you see is numbers, then that's all they typed
